You’re renewing your auto insurance, coffee in hand, when you hear it on the radio: Ontario is planning auto insurance reform in 2026. If you’re like most drivers, your first thought is simple: What does that mean for me? Will your coverage change? Will the claims process look different? Will your premium move?

The good news is you won’t be left guessing,  but the changes do make it more important to understand what your policy includes, especially around accident benefits.

What’s Changing

Starting July 1, 2026, Ontario will shift how accident benefits are built into your policy.

These benefits will remain mandatory (automatically included):

  • Medical benefits (to help pay for treatment)
  • Rehabilitation benefits (to support recovery and regaining function)
  • Attendant care benefits (for help with personal care needs if you’re seriously injured)

Several other accident benefits will become optional, meaning you may be able to choose whether to keep them as part of your coverage. These include:

  • Income replacement benefits (support if you can’t work)
  • Caregiver benefits (support if you can’t care for dependents the way you did before)
  • Housekeeping and home maintenance benefits (help with tasks you can’t do due to injury)
  • Non-earner benefits (support for people who weren’t working at the time, like some students)
  • Funeral benefits (support for certain end-of-life costs)

In other words, Ontario is keeping treatment and recovery supports built in,  but many of the “life disruption” supports may become something you choose.

What happens at renewal?

Under the model described, your policy will generally renew with the coverage you already have, unless you decide to remove optional accident benefits.

That’s helpful because it avoids sudden changes. But it also means your renewal is a great time to understand what you currently carry and what it would mean if you opted out later.

What you can do right now

You don’t need to rush into changes just because reform is coming. But it’s a great time for a quick check-in.

Here are a few smart steps:

  • Review your limits and deductibles so you know what you’d pay out of pocket in a claim.
  • Confirm your coverages (like comprehensive, collision, or rental coverage) still match your vehicle and budget.
  • Be honest about how you use your car. Commuting, business use, and annual mileage can affect your policy.
  • Ask questions early so you’re not scrambling at renewal time.

Change doesn’t have to feel confusing

Insurance reform can sound like a big, complicated topic, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. The right advice can help you understand what’s changing, what isn’t, and what choices make sense for your household.
