Be Prepared

The key to being able to manage through an emergency is to anticipate as much as you can before a situation happens. Having a few simple steps in place reduces the need to problem-solve under pressure.

Be winter road-ready

Because of the unpredictability of our climate, schedule the installation of your four snow tires before the cold weather hits.
Keep your gas tank close to full in the winter in case you get stuck,as idling your engine may be your only source of heat. If your car is older, crack the window to ensure carbon monoxide doesn’t build up.
Make sure your battery and charging system are well maintained.
Keep an emergency kit inside your vehicle when going on a long journey, especially in the winter
- Food that won’t spoil, such as energy bars
- Water—plastic bottles that won’t break if the water freezes
- Blankets
- Extra clothing and shoes or boots
- First aid kit with seatbelt cutter
- Small shovel, scraper and snowbrush
- Candle in a deep can and matches
- Wind-up flashlight
- Whistle—in case you need to attract attention
- Roadmaps
- Portable Cell phone charger (make sure to top it up before any long car journey)
- Copy of your emergency plan
Items to keep in your trunk:
- Snowbrush and ice scraper
- Sand, salt or cat litter (non-clumping)
- Winter antifreeze and windshield washer fluid
- Tow rope
- Jumper cables
- Fire extinguisher
- Warning light or road flares
- An old pair of boots: throw them in the trunk, too.

When faced with any emergency:

Remain calm.
Use your plan!
Take care of yourself and your family first.
