Be Prepared

You put your heart and soul into your business. Be sure to also make plans for disaster recovery so your company can function if an emergency situation presents itself. It can be hard to think straight when a crisis happens, so having the steps in place ahead of time will make getting back to business much easier.

For your business

  • Create an Emergency Plan that details what must be done when certain types of incidents arise. This plan should be written with input from key employees in your business and should include a phone listing for all employees as well as information regarding alternate location(s) in the event your place of business is inaccessible.
  • If you have more than a few employees, consider establishing a phone tree for notifying employees of an emergency.
  • Prepare employees ahead of time. Talk to them about their roles and responsibilities during an emergency. Keep them informed of the emergency plan and review it with them regularly.
  • At a minimum, have an emergency kit with flashlights, candles, a crank radio (get one that has a USB port to charge your cell phone) and a first aid kit. This kit should be checked on a regular basis.
  • Having a portable (or hard-wired) generator can provide you with power for critical equipment in the event of an extended outage. Be sure to test it regularly to ensure it is ready to go when you need it.
  • In winter, be sure that walkways and parking lots are always clear of ice and snow and well salted/sanded.

When faced with any kind of emergency

  • Remain calm.
  • Use your plan!
  • Taking care of the critical tasks for your own business first may put you in a better position to help your neighbouring businesses and the local community during an emergency situation.

If you’re not sure about the coverage you have for emergencies, ask your Broker to review your policy with you.
